Norman J. Herndon
The Norman J. Herndon Scholarship was established to honor its namesake upon his passing in 2013.
Norman was born February 8, 1933, to Ivan Zeldon and Frances Elizabeth (Hobelmann) Herndon near Union, Missouri. He graduated from St. Clair High School in 1950.
After attending Northeast Missouri State Teachers’ College (now Truman State University), he taught seventh grade for two years in St. Clair, Missouri. He married Mary Louise England in 1953 before being inducted into the Army. Upon returning to civilian life, he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees, both from Truman. He served as superintendent of schools in Livonia, Mt. Moriah, Tri-County of Jamesport, Fairfax, and for his last 17 years in Kearney, all in Missouri. Upon retirement they moved to Warsaw, Missouri. During their 21 years there, Norman served as Executive Secretary for the Warsaw Chamber of Commerce and as creel clerk on the Lake of the Ozarks.
Norman was a member of the Lions Club and the American Legion. He was a fourth degree member, past Grand Knight and District Deputy in the Knights of Columbus, and a past member of the St. Ann’s Parish Council in Warsaw, Missouri. He was a member of the Missouri School Administrators and the Retired Teachers Association.
This scholarship fund has been established to honor his memory and provide college scholarships to high school seniors who best exemplify his ideals.
The fund is supported by generous donations from family, friends, and various organizations, and through an annual fishing tournament.
